If you click a word in the Windows 10 settings application five times, activate a hidden retail demo mode. Almost certainly you do not want to do it yourself, but know how to escape the Retail Demo experience is essential if you’ve ever seen the name “Darrin DeYoung” on your login screen.
Warning: Enabling this mode will erase all personal files on your PC and reset factory default settings. Do not do it on your home PC! (You probably should not even do this on any PC.
How to Enable Retail Demo Experience
To enable the retail demo experience for Windows 10, go to Settings> Update & Security> Activate. Click the “Windows” heading at the top of the page 05 times.
You will see a “Change to retail demo” window appears. Still, if you continue with this, all your personal files will be deleted from your PC and will be resotred to its factory defaults settings. If you want to continue, click “Change”. During this process you will need to be connected to the Internet.
A screen that requires retail access code, retailer SKU code, and Retail Store ID will be displayed. You do not have to provide any of these. All are optional, so you can click “Next” and continue with the wizard.
When setting retail demo experience or “RDX” mode, you will be asked when you want to remove access to your administrator account. If you set Retail Demo experience on a PC with a display in a retail store, this will give you time to configure your PC as you want before making sure no customer can access the administrator account. You can select a number of days or provide an administrator password that you can use as long as you want.
When done, click “Finish”. The PC will restart and all personal data and installed programs will be deleted.
The process of activating the retail demo experience is handled through the retail demo service. In fact, if you delete the “RetailDemo” service and try to switch to Retail Demo mode, you can access the server, but nothing will happen at the end. If the service is on your system, your PC will restart and enable the Retail Demo mode.
What is the Retail Demo Experience?
When the PC restarts in Retail Demo Mode, it will automatically start on the Windows desktop. You will see that the user account name is “Darrin DeYoung”.
If you ever buy a PC and see this person’s name when you boot it up, that PC is a display model and still stays in Retail Demo Mode. The store should have removed it from the retail demo mode before giving it to you, but you can do it by yourself using the instructions below. On the other hand, if you expect a new PC and not one that is used as a display model, you may want to return it to the store and get a replacement or your money back.
A Microsoft Provisioning Demo Retail application will be displayed that will automatically configure everything.
When in Retail Demo Mode, Windows will automatically launch the “Microsoft Demo Attract” application, which plays a video demo in a loop. If you leave, you can use the Microsoft Retail Demo Center to read the features of Windows 10. You can also click on the desktop and play with Windows 10. This is just a special mode designed to advertise Windows 10 in stores after all.
How To Quit Retail Demo Mode
To quit the Retail Demo Experience, you just have to do the same secret handshake that will enable you first. In the PC in the Retail Demo Experience mode, go to Settings> Update & Security> Activate and click the “Windows” heading 05 times.
Click the “Advanced Settings” button at the bottom of the “Get the latest Content and demo Applications” Window that appears.
Click the “Remove” button to the right of Remove “RDX” in the “RDX” advanced configuration screen.
Warning: This wipe your PC again, deletes any personal files, removes any installed programs, and resets factory defaults.
You may be prompted to enter your administrator password if it was created while setting up the retail demo experience. We know that “trs10” works on many Windows 10 PCs, while “trs80” works on many Windows 8 PCs. In fact, this works on PCs in both the Best Buy and Microsoft Store and maybe even elsewhere.
After telling Windows to remove the retail demo experience from the computer, it will restart and reset the PC to its default factory settings. You will see the usual PC configuration process, also known as “Out of Box Experience”, which allows you to configure your PC for normal use.
